Housing Partnership Program Offers Skills for Homeowners

December 2007 - West Babylon, NY - The Housing Partnership,
one of the nation’s largest producers of affordable housing, hosted
a very special graduation ceremony on December 12, 2007 for the fourth
graduating class of the free 8-week Home Maintenance Training and Repair
program for low and moderate-income homeowners in Southeast Queens. Offered
in partnership with Margert Community Corporation, the local non-profit
housing agency, the program is funded by donations from several organizations
including the Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR). “A
home is probably the most important investment a person will make in
their lifetime and the need to maintain that investment is crucial for
the success and well-being of the residents and the community. This
program is very exciting and successful. LIBOR is proud to sponsor
it,” said LIBOR President Linda Bonarelli.
The Home Maintenance and Repair Program is offered to low and moderate-income
prospective and existing homeowners. It was developed by the Housing
Partnership to assist homeowners with maintaining their investment. Classes
are limited to 20 to maximize the learning experience and taught by Walter
Mullins, a professional home repair expert.
“The Home Maintenance course is designed to provide homeowners
skills for home repair work and preventative maintenance. It also
empowers and helps them to recognize the amount of work and actual cost
in contracted services in order to avoid home repair scams,” said
Housing Partnership President and CEO Dan Martin.
The eight week, two-hour sessions are held at a custom-fabricated workshop “set” built
within St. Gertrude’s gymnasium in Far Rockaway. Constructed by
The Briarwood Organization with assistance from apprentice trainees,
the workshop is divided into sections that include kitchen and bath plumbing
modules, electrical wiring installations, easy-to-do energy efficiency
measures, drywall surfaces and flooring areas. Each participant
receives a Dare to Repair, textbook provided by its publisher
Harper and Collins.
